Christmas at Victoria Square: December in Surfers Paradise

by | Nov 1, 2026 | Local Events

December from Victoria Square Apartments splits into two halves: a calm, warm start and a full-throttle festive fortnight once the Queensland school holidays begin on 12 December. Here is how Christmas works in this corner of Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach: the lights and events, what books out and when, and what is actually open on the day.

What does December look like around the neighbourhood?

The month builds week by week. Pacific Fair, a 14 minute walk away, runs its Christmas program from late November: decorations through the centre, extended trading as the day nears and the annual Santa set for family photos, with hours published on the Pacific Fair website. The Star, a 12 minute walk over the bridge, lists its December entertainment and festive dining on its what’s on page, and the big carols and community events across the coast confirm their dates through November. Our honest advice: lock accommodation and Christmas dining first, then slot the events in once the December calendars land. The neighbourhood does the atmosphere for free, with the dining blocks strung with lights and the beachfront busy with early-evening walkers.

What books out, and when should you move?

Three things, in this order. Christmas Day lunch is first: the restaurants that open on the day, led by the dining rooms at The Star and a handful of Broadbeach tables, take bookings months out and are generally gone by the end of November. Accommodation is second: the fortnight from 19 December is the tightest of the year, and two-bedroom apartments go earliest. New Year’s Eve dinner is third, with the 8pm-to-midnight sittings filling through early December. The apartment advantage is real leverage here: with a full kitchen, a Christmas morning seafood lunch on your own balcony needs nothing more than an order from a local fishmonger placed a week out, and the foreshore BBQs at Kurrawa stay free all season.

What is open on Christmas Day?

The best of it. Kurrawa Beach is patrolled on Christmas Day as it is every day of the year, and a Christmas morning swim with the flags up is the coast’s favourite tradition; expect the sand busy with families by 8am. The Surfers Paradise Beachfront Markets pause for the day itself but run their usual Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evenings either side of it. The G:link tram runs a public holiday timetable, so a carless Christmas works fine. On the closed list: most cafes and shops, the big supermarkets, and Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, which shuts for Christmas Day and reopens on Boxing Day. Do the grocery run by the afternoon of the 24th and the day looks after itself.

How do you plan the week between Christmas and New Year?

Loosely. This is the coast’s busiest week, and the trick is to run against the tide: beach before 9am, pool through the middle of the day, dinner either early at 5.30pm or late after 8.30pm to dodge the crush. Boxing Day belongs to the Pacific Fair sales if you have the appetite, or to the quietest patrolled sand you can find if you do not. The markets, the Oceanway and the foreshore BBQs all run as normal, and the Broadbeach dining blocks hold walk-in space at off-peak times even in peak week. New Year’s Eve caps it off with fireworks over Surfers Paradise beach, an easy walk or tram ride north, before the coast exhales into January.

What is December weather actually like?

Hot, but coastal-hot rather than inland-hot. December days on this stretch typically sit in the high twenties with the sea breeze arriving mid-morning, and the Pacific is at its most inviting, warm enough that nobody hesitates at the shore. The pattern to plan around is the classic summer afternoon storm: brief, dramatic and usually cleared within the hour, which is why locals front-load the day. Swim and walk before noon, keep the middle of the day for the pool, lunch or Pacific Fair’s air conditioning, and hold the evening for the markets or the dining blocks once the air softens. Sunscreen, a hat and a refillable water bottle are the only kit the month demands, and the beach showers handle the rest.

December in Surfers Paradise FAQs

What is open on Christmas Day on the Gold Coast?

The beach, first and foremost: Kurrawa and the main patrolled beaches have lifeguards on duty year-round, Christmas Day included. The G:link tram runs a holiday timetable. Most cafes and shops close, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary closes for the day, and restaurant lunches that do trade book out weeks ahead.

When should you book Christmas lunch or dinner?

By the end of November for anywhere popular. Christmas Day tables at The Star’s restaurants and the Broadbeach dining rooms that open for the day are among the first bookings on the coast to sell out, and the remaining venues fill through early December. Book the table before you pack a single bag.

Where can you watch New Year’s Eve fireworks?

Surfers Paradise beach hosts the Gold Coast’s biggest New Year’s Eve celebration, with fireworks over the sand typically at 8pm for families and midnight for the rest. From Victoria Square Apartments you can walk the beachfront north, or watch the midnight show from the quieter sand at Kurrawa.

How busy is December in Surfers Paradise?

The month runs in two gears. Early December is calm: warm water, open restaurant tables and easy parking. From 12 December, when the Queensland school holidays start, the coast moves to peak-season pace through late January, so book accommodation and Christmas dining well before the switch.

A Gold Coast Christmas from an apartment is the easy version of the season: your own kitchen for the morning that matters, a balcony for the long warm evenings, and the beach six minutes away for the swim that starts the day. Check our apartments and rates to book your December stay, and keep an eye on our Events page as the season’s dates are confirmed through November.
